Show more

“…Methodological aspects: tagging and acoustic system This is the first telemetry study to be carried out on this species, though radio tracking has been employed to study migratory behaviour near dams in Europe (Steinbach et al, 1986;Travade et al, 1989). Acoustic-telemetry studies on homing and the effects of dams on the upstream progression have been carried out on the American shad (Alosa sapidissima, Wilson) in North America (Dodson and Leggett, 1973;Beasley and Hightower, 2000;Moser et al, 2000).…”

“…The fish were tagged internally by gently sliding the acoustic tag through the mouth into the stomach while they were held underwater. This was an adaptation of the method used by Steinbach et al (1986) and Moser et al (2000), illustrated in Bridger and Booth (2003). Handling of fish under anaesthesia never took more than 2 min before they were transferred into a second tub that received freshwater via a pump.…”

“…Considering the high average migration speed (mean speed during active spawning run was 51.60 km j À1 ranging from 21.13 to 91.43 km j À1 ), it is likely that shads had little to no stops. These values are relatively high compared to those estimated by other authors: 17e23 km j À1 in the Gironde Estuary (Rochard, 2001), 21 km j À1 in the Loire Estuary (Mennesson-Boisneau and or 20.5 km j À1 in the freshwater Loire River (Steinbach et al, 1986). Estimated speeds in A. sapidissima ranged between 8.5 and 80.4 km j À1 in the Connecticut River (Katz, 1986).…”
