Radioactivity and Risk Assessment with Uncertainty Treatment for Analysis of Black Sand Minerals

Abstract: Precise radiological analysis of environmental, ores, nuclear materials and minerals samples is of great value for monitoring and surveillance objectives. The information deduced from the analysis can be used to identify the origin and nature of the accompanied activities. This work focuses on analysis of some black sand ore samples to identify and quantify their radioisotopes and potential risk. The analysis can provide useful information about the environmental transport mechanism and about the sources of ra… Show more

“…The conditions of secular equilibrium between the parent nucleus and its daughter in natural radioactivity are long‐lived; nearly five half‐lives of daughter to reach secular equilibrium , . Although 226 Ra is the fifth daughter of 238 U, in the studied soil samples, their content was not related to each other as a result of these soil type preparation from multi content (planet, sand, mud), as mentioned earlier.…”

“…The gamma index is determined using Eq. ( 2), according to Abdel-Rahman, et al [22]. The Iγ ≤ 2 values correspond to an annual dose rate of 0.3 mSv y -1 , while Iγ ≤ 6 values correspond to a dose rate of 1 mSv y -1 .…”

“…The radionuclides emit gamma radiation which can be a health hazard. To further assess the potential hazards caused by using the sands as construction materials, we calculated the Gamma Specific Activity Index (Iγ) which examines whether a construction material meets the regulatory limit of dose criteria (0.3 to 1 mSv y -1 ) for gamma radiation (Abdel-Rahman et al, 2021). Iγ is calculated using Equation 2.…”
