“…These patterns are in accordance with what Branco (1906) described for another fragment of skin recovered from the CdM and housed in the Berlin Museum. A rosette was also recognized in the cephalic osteoderms of one specimen of Glossotherium robustum , indicating this kind of arrangement could be present in other mylodontid taxa. In thin sections, it was possible to recognize and describe in detail the anatomical features of the ossicles and their development, complementing and expanding previous descriptions. Several hypotheses on biological roles (protection against predation and/or intraspecific aggression, and thermal insulation) can be proposed to address the presence of these features among mylodontines, but further evidence is required for their assessment. Dermal armor appears to be a synapomorphy of Mylodontini, recorded since the late Miocene‐early Pliocene to the Upper Pleistocene (see Pérez et al, 2021), and evolved as a convergence with cingulates, but also showing more complexity in spatial arrangement (and perhaps in function) than previously accepted.…”

“…MLP 94‐VIII‐10‐28 consists of an extremely dehydrated and hard skin portion that, since its discovery, has lost much of its hair. The skin was previously sampled several times for various analyses (e.g., radiocarbon dates, fungal decay assessment, see Pérez et al, 2021), and has remained on exhibit for almost a century (Pérez et al, 2018). Due to its uniqueness and fragility, only restricted manipulation was allowed for this study.…”
