Radiochemical Extraction of Lanthanide Thiocyanate Complexes with Bis-2-Ethylhexyl Sulphoxide

Abstract: The extraction of lanthanides (Ln) such as Nd(III), Eu(III) and Er(III) from thiocyanate solutions by bis-2-ethylhexyl sulphoxide (B2EHSO) in benzene has been studied by tracer techniques. For comparison, extraction studies have been carried out with di-n-octyl sulphoxide (DOSO) and tri-octyl phosphine oxide (TOPO). Extraction studies have also been carried out with mixtures of B2EHSO and DOSO or TOPO. A relatively small synergistic enhancement has been observed with a mixture of extractants, which may be due … Show more

“…Their other advantages include good thermal stability, low toxicity (good coordination ability) and relatively cheap supply. Among the dialkyl sulfoxides, bis-2-ethylhexyl sulfoxide (B2EHSO), a novel sterically hindered branched chain neutral extractant, has been studied for the extraction of lanthanides(III), 13 uranium(VI) 14 and palladium(II). 15 B2EHSO offers distinct advantages over other analogues with unrestricted solubility in an alkane diluent.…”

“…Comparing the equilibrium constants of various chelating agents for the extraction of Nd(III), log/:HrrA = -7.59 [12], log/sTHPMTFP = -3.97 [13] and logATHPBi = -3. The mechanism of synergistic extraction of these trivalent lanthanoids was further confirmed by analyzing the equilibrium data (Figs.…”

“…1 -Phenyl-3-methyl-4-acetyl-pyrazolone-5 (HPMAP), pKa = 3.78, though a promising chelate extractant for actinides [10] has not been investigated for its potential synergism in the extraction of trivalent lanthanides and actinides. Further, synergistic solvent extraction studies using sulphoxides and octyl(phenyl)-N,Ndiisobutylcarbomylmethyl phosphine oxide (CMPO) as neutral donors in the presence of /J-di ketones are sparse [4,11]. Pruett et al [4] have studied the synergistic extraction of Eu(III) and Am(III) with ΗΤΤΑ in the presence of CMPO as a neutral donor.…”

Bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulphoxide (B2EHSO), a novel sterically hindered branched chain extractant, has been recently explored as a neutral donor for the synergistic solvent extraction of trivalent lanthanides in the presence of ΗΤΤΑ in our laboratory [11],…”
