Although the brain is an important part of a person's sexual life, little is known about the correlations between sexual response and brain activation. This study examines brain responses through clinical testing to reveal several brain structures whose activation is relevant to sexual arousal besides psychological testing according to the common traditional values and standards of Iranian society. Based on an initial self-report, 25 homosexual and 25 heterosexual males participated in this test to elucidate the identity and sexual trends via the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2). Also, an fMRI technique—by presenting distinct homo- and heterosexual sex erotic pictures during the test—was employed in neural correlates of sexual arousal via blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal measuring and Statistical Parametric Mapping analysis. In five selected homosexuals by the most appropriate MMPI test score, brain activities were significantly detected in the midbrain, amygdala, anterior cingulate gyrus, frontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, globus pallidus, thalamus, and putamen when the participant saw the erotic pictures during the test, which were responsive to sexual arousal. Also, bilateral caudate nucleus, left angular gyrus, and bilateral pallidum were activated but five selected heterosexuals showed no activation in these areas (p < 0.001). Likewise, the MMPI method confirmed that homosexuality was relevant to diverse life positions, and biological and socioeconomic aspects. The maximum positive correlations were pairwise found in the parietal lobule by r = 0.61 (p < 0.05) and in the frontal gyrus by r = 0.64 (p = 0.10), and the minimum negative correlations were in globus pallidus by r = − 0.18 (p < 0.10) and r = − 0.16 (p < 0.10) for homosexuals and heterosexuals, correspondingly. These results may be useful for understanding the different neural mechanisms of personality recognition and sexual orientation changes while incorporating the individual's history and experience simultaneously into the assessment.

Objective: The collimators in which the various geometrical configurations have been suggested to optimize the sensitivity and resolution have a key role in acquiring the qualified images in nuclear medicine towards a better recognition of some diseases. Methods: In this study, a new configuration as a geometrical combination of the conical, cylindrical and spherical (CCS) volumes for parallel hole collimators which is assessed by using the volumetric-parametric method has been introduced to improve point spread function (PSF) being the collimators response on the radioactive point source. It has been simulated by the MCNPX code at the various energies values of the point source along with the traditional collimator in which included the cylindrical volume only. Results: The PSF will transmogrify from a delta function to a distribution which can correlate with a Gaussian distribution, while the scattered gamma rays were increased. The simulation results have indicated that the PSF in the CCS configuration is narrower than that of the cylindrical one at all the energies, leading the improvement of the resolution. Also, the theoretical results are agreement with the simulated ones. The more the energy value of the source, the more broaden the PSF will be due the more penetration strength. The narrower the PSF, the better the qualified image will be. Conclusion: This method may be employed to determine the accurate attenuation coefficient of absorbers as well.

The main concern in radiotherapy of the breast is covering the target volume and increasing the dose absorbed by tumor cells. The aim is intended to provide a pertinent moldable perspective to the currently utilized methods of calculating Kerma value (KV) as a function of distance from nipple. The KV in the breast deformed for two shapes, such as cylindrical-conical (CC) and cubic-rectangular (CR), was simulated using Monte Carlo method with appropriate assumptions and a 2 MeV X-ray system. The source was positioned near the right breast. Simulation results demonstrated that decreasing height of CR shape reduced the absorption and scattering cross-sections as well as the KV. Relative accumulated dose for a CR-shaped breast was 96.89% lower than that for CC-shaped breast. The KV in the breast decreased with increasing distance from the nipple (depth) for both shapes, but for right and left breasts in CR form was independent from depth with no change between breasts as depth increased. The relative difference in KV between the breasts was significant for CR shape, in which the KV was high at low depths and decreased linearly with increasing depth. Tumors are often differentiable in the breast form; hence, the normal breast should be deformed into CR shape to improve the degree of tissue protection in adjuvant radiotherapy. It is expected that the dose absorbed by the gland will be more strongly increased for CC shape rather than for CR shape in radiation therapy.
