Radiographic and Ultrasonographic Features of Canine Paraprostatic Cysts

Abstract: Mineralization of paraprostatic cysts is reported to be uncommon. This retrospective study was performed to review the imaging findings of eight histologically confirmed canine paraprostatic cysts. Radiographic patterns of mineralization seen are described. Four of the eight dogs had mineralized cysts. Mineralization seen on radiography was not consistently seen on ultrasonography, probably due to the lack of acoustic shadowing artefact from the small depth of mineralized tissue. It is thus concluded that mine… Show more

“…This patient was presented due to an inguinal mass but was otherwise asymptomatic. Imaging techniques such as abdominal ultrasound are essential to diagnose prostatic cysts, and to evaluate their shape, location and size 8 . They normally present as fluid‐filled structures arising from the prostate into the abdomen or pelvic canal 8 .…”

“…Paraprostatic cysts may become large, with a thick or thin wall, containing anechoic fluid with echogenic sedimentation 5 . However, mineralization of these cysts is also a hallmark radiographic feature, which was not present in the dog in this report 6 . Omental abscesses can have an irregular wall surrounding a hypoechogenic homogenous fluid‐filled center 7 .…”

“…The etiology of paraprostatic cysts is insufficiently described. Several mechanisms have been proposed for the development of these cysts, including anomalous enlargement of the Müllerian duct remnant, abnormal retention of prostatic secretions caused by ductal obstruction, and as a sequel to prostatic hematoma [ 5 10 12 14 ]. CT of paraprostatic cysts reveals large, fluid-filled cavitary lesions arising from the prostate gland.…”
