Radiographic Measurement of Joint Space Width Using the Fixed Flexion View in 1,102 Knees of Japanese Patients with Osteoarthritis in Comparison with the Standing Extended View

Abstract: PurposeThe fixed flexion view (FFV) of the knee is considered useful for evaluating the joint space when assessing the severity of osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. To clarify the usefulness of FFV for evaluation of the joint space and severity of knee OA, this study evaluated changes in the joint space on the FFV and standing extended view (SEV) in patients with knee OA.Materials and MethodsThe SEV and FFV images were acquired in 567 patients (1,102 knees) who visited the hospital with a chief complaint of kne… Show more

“…In PA projection, the X‐ray beam is directed from behind the patient. When the patient is positioned for a FFV their thigh is in contact with the detector plate, toes are in the same line with the detector, feet are in a 10° external rotation and the X‐ray beam is directed in a 10° caudal angle (Kan et al, ; Niinimäki, Ojala, Niinimäki, & Leppilahti, ).…”

“…FFV images were acquired as described. [ 5 , 6 ] Briefly, the patient stood with a 10° external rotation of the feet, with the anterior thigh in close contact with the cassette and the tips of the toes on the same plane as that of the cassette. A posteroanterior image was acquired at an irradiation angle of 10° tilt in the caudal direction (Fig.…”
