“…The frontal scans with the patient in a dorsal position proposed by usl,2,15 show a whole section of the spleen and the anatomically adjacent elements (left kidney, adrenal gland, left hemidiaphragm, and aorta). It is interesting that with frontal views of the spleen ob~ tained during urography or arteriography Blendis et al 16 have found a highly significant linear correlation relating the splenic surface area to the decimal logarithm of the weight of the spleen. The seriography of the spleen that comprises three sectional scans, transverse, frontal, and sagittal, also allows us to construct diagrams of the tridimensional representation of the spleen 1 similar to the ones described for the liver.…”

“…In patients with splenomegaly the splenic activity may rise more slowly and reach a plateau only after 10 to 20 minutes, owing to a second and slower-mixing compartment of red cells within the enlarged spleen (Motulsky, Casserd, Giblett, Brown, and Finch, 1958). The weight of the spleen was obtained either at splenectomy or from the area of the spleen on an anterioposterior abdominal radiograph according to the method of Blendis, Williams, and Kreel (1969). In one patient in whom oesophageal varices were present on barium swallow and in another with pronounced splenomegaly the spleen blood flow was measured, expressed as ml./100g.…”

“…
The relationships between portal hypertension and spleen enlargement, in patients with liver cirrhosis, are not clearly defined; as well as those between splenic haemodynamics and portal hypertension. In 25 cirrhotics with spleen enlargement and portal hypertension and in seven controls, the following parameters were determined: estimated splenic volume ( E S V ) from the radiographic view of the spleen, according to Blendis, Williams and Kreel (1969), specific splenic blood-flow (SSBF), total splenic blood-flow (TSBF), portohepatic gradient ( P H G ) , specific splenic resistance ( S S R ) and total splenic resistance ( T S R ) . Moreover, the size and extension of oesophageal varices, at oesophagoscopy, were classified according to Dagradi .
