Radiological findings in myxoid liposarcoma of the anterior mediastinum.

Abstract: CT and MR findings of a rare myxoid liposarcoma involving the anterior mediastinum are reported. The mass was a low density lesion with calcific septations and some peripheral frond-like enhancement on CT. MRI showed heterogeneous intermediate to high signal intensity on T1 weighted images and high signal intensity on T2 weighted images. The signal of the mass was not suppressed on fat suppressed images.

“…reports of very large primary mediastinal liposarcomas that adhered to adjacent tissues (18)(19)(20) (1,15,18). In the present case, it seemed that the part of the tumor that received radiotherapy was well controlled, whereas the rest of the tumor that did not receive radiotherapy progressed, suggesting that radiotherapy might have contributed to local control of the tumor.…”

“…Characteristic CT findings and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) show inhomogeneous soft tissue densities and intensities equal to that of fat. 2 In this case, especially in well-differentiated tumors, radiopaque foci caused by calcification and ossification may be present. 3 We conducted large-core needle biopsy under CT guidance to obtain material at a specific the tumor site.…”

“…Well-differentiated liposarcomas are typically composed of more than 75% fat, while the other histologic types usually have less than 25% [6]. Liposarcomas are radiosensitive soft-tissue tumors and the more aggressive tumors demonstrate more radiopacity [5]. Poorly differentiated liposarcomas, particularly the pleomorphic type liposarcoma, may be indistinguishable from other mediastinal malignancies such as malignant fibrous histiocytoma, leiomyosarcoma, desmoids, mesothelial tumors, lymphomas, metastases, and inflammatory masses.…”
