Radiological Hazard Assessment of Radionuclides in Sediment Samples of Tigris River in Mosul city, Iraq

Abstract: This study was conducted in order to measure the levels of natural radiation in sediments of the Tigris River in the city of Mosul, in northern Iraq, using the gamma spectroscopy technique to calculate the activity concentrations of natural radionuclides in the sediments, The results showed that the activity concentrations of 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K. ranged between (6.30±0.319-13.73±0.411) Bq/kg and an average(9.86±0.385) Bq/kg for 226 Ra, and between (13.39±0.626-29.84±0.923) Bq/kg and an average of (23.05±0… Show more

“…The samples were then placed on a plastic plate in a suitable place to air dry, after which the samples were placed in an electric oven at a temperature of 100ºC for two hours to rid the samples of moisture, After complete drying, the samples were homogenized by grinding them with an electric mill and then sifted with a mesh sieve with dimensions of 0.75 mm. Each sample was placed in a sealed plastic container weighing 1 kg, and then the samples were stored for at least 4 weeks to achieve a permanent balance between the radionuclides and their daughters [8] .…”

“…eq (Bq/l) = A Ra + 1.43 A Th + 0.077A k 2 Where ARa, ATh, and AK are the specific activity of 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 k in units of Bq/l. The maximum universally permitted value of equivalent radium activity (Raeq) is 370 Bq/l 22 .…”
