Radiological outcome and gait function of SCFE patients after growth arrest

Abstract: Taken as a whole, the pathoanatomy of the hip joint after SCFE matched the functional results gained by gait analysis. Functional outcome varied slightly depending on the radiological findings after growth arrest. Differences were most pronounced for foot progression. Only with the help of gait analysis was it possible to describe deviations more precisely and objectively. Further studies are required in order to show which alterations are relevant for the development of secondary osteoarthritis.

“…In these studies, it was shown that changes in joint kinematics and clinical scores may be related to radiological deformity of the proximal femur, especially at the head-neck junction. 15,16 The correlation between the radiologic deformities of knee and ankle and clinical scores may be a subject of future research in SCFE patients over a long-term follow-up duration. None of our patients had ankle pain.…”

“…Proximal epiphysiolysis of the femur is still a neglected disease due to the lack of early diagnosis. 1,2 Simple pelvis radiography is the method of choice for the diagnosis through the measurement of the lateral angle between the proximal epiphysis and the diaphysis of the femur. Southwick, in his original work, 3 considered the angle of normality of around 10°based on a small number of individuals.…”

“…Correlation of the clinical and radiological results of deformity after slippage with gait analysis (GA), which provides a better understanding of the functional results, may lead to a better evaluation of indications of future joint preservation surgeries. There are a limited number of studies on the evaluation of patients with SCFE by objective methods such as GA [8,[10][11][12].…”
