Radiological‐pathological correlation of malignant teratoma with liposarcomatous transformation: Proven by repeated transthoracic needle biopsy

Abstract: A mediastinal germ cell tumor with a sarcomatous component is extremely rare and is accompanied by a poor prognosis. Clinical and radiologic diagnosis is very difficult. Herein, we report a rare case of anterior mediastinal malignant teratoma containing a growing liposarcomatous component and detail the diagnostic process. The case was diagnosed by repeated transthoracic needle biopsy and correlated with changes in follow‐up chest computed tomography and serum tumor markers. We also provide a review of the lit… Show more

“…Firstly, chromosomal abnormalities have been detected such as isochromosome 12p or rearrangement of 2q (21) and it has been proved by Honecker F et al (22) that mature teratoma cells could undergo de-differentiate in vitro into malignant tissues, Secondly, a totipotential embryonal carcinoma cell transformed to a neoplasm of the somatic type through malignant de-differentiation could also be related with this phenomenon (23) . Few other cases of immature teratoma with somatic-type malignancy have been reported previously (Table 1) (24)(25)(26)(27)(28) . To our best knowledge, this is the largest primary mediastinum immature teratoma with somatic-type malignant transformation which received an en bloc resection so far.…”

“…Another set of dryland crops including teff ( Eragrostis tef ) and fonio ( Digitaria sp.) which despite their applications in food and feed, high nutrient content and high durability, are among the most under-utilized crop species in the African region ( Lee, 2018 ). Teff is considered as “risk crop” due to its high adaptivity even under extreme conditions of drought and waterlogging and is now in high demand as a forage crop ( Miller, 2007 ).…”
