“…To elucidate the FLASH effect in more detail, roles played by water radiolysis products in earlier scavenging time scale (<7.4 ns) should be evaluated using the pulse radiolysis method. 36,37 Additionally, yields of other water radiolysis species will be investigated in near future. 38,39 The FLASH effect is multifactorial and proceeds from a delicate balance between dose, oxygen availability, reactions induced by radicals and DNA repair and the target cells intrinsic tolerance to peroxyl radicals.…”

“…Some time-resolved radiolysis systems have already been developed with linear accelerators. [3][4][5] However, most of these systems are not laboratory sized, and they deliver electron beams with electron energy too high for solid-state spectroscopy. Such restrictions have significantly slowed the progress of ultrafast radiolysis and the expansion of these variations.…”

“…Increasing work is dealing with the determination of time-dependent yields of radicals during the radiolysis of aqueous systems through pulsed ion beams of high LET particles. Optical absorbance of radicals (SCN) 2 À or SO 4 À is used to measure at increasing scavenger KSCN or S 2 O 8 2À concentration the OH 144 and (e aq À H) yields, 145 respectively, resulting from the radical distribution and intra-track reactions caused by pulsed 24-MeV 4 He 2 ion beams (LET 35 eV nm À1 ). The radical cations MV have been used to compare the total radical yield, the OH radical yield, and the structure of tracks generated by 60 Co g-rays, 2^15 MeV H and 5^20 MeV 4 He 2 ion beams after radical scavenging by formate ion, with or without tert-butanol, and secondary reduction of methyl viologen.…”
