Radiovirotherapy: Principles and Prospects in Oncology

Abstract: Radiovirotherapy is defined as the use of viruses to deliver radioisotopic treatment into infected cells. Oncolytic viruses are able to selectively target and kill cancer cells. The combination of oncolytic viruses and radiation therapies can have synergistic antitumour properties. Viruses may act as radiosensitizers, and radiations can increase viral oncolytic properties. The combination of oncolytic viruses with a virally-directed radioisotope therapy is an innovative method to combine viruses and radiation … Show more

“…Current cancer treatments involve combination therapies such as radioimmunotherapy [29,58], radiovirotherapy [15,59], and immunotherapy combined with targeted therapies [23,41,63], to name but a few. Presently, despite aggressive treatments including combination therapies, most cancers often recur due to their resistance to conventional therapies and limitations to effective therapies [60].…”

“…Similarly, incorporation of other high-energy alpha particles (e.g., 213 Bi, 211 At, 225 Ac) is under investigation [164]. Other novel combined treatment methods such as radiovirotherapy (use of oncolytic viruses to deliver radionuclide therapy into infected cancer cells) are also exciting recent developments [165]. …”
