Evaluation of indoor radon level and its health risk parameters has been carried out in three communities Azuabie, Trans-Amadi and Nkpogu towns in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. A pocket sized Corentium Arthings digital radon detector meter was used to record the indoor radon concentration levels. The geographical coordinates were recorded using a hand-held geographical positioning system (GPS) for the various sample points. A total of 30 sample points were evaluated, with 10 sample points for each town respectively. The results of the concentration levels showed that for Azuabie (AZ) town, the concentration level varied from 6.660 Bqm-3 to 13.690 Bqm-3 with an average of 10.65±0.95Bqm-3. Nkpogu (NK) town the results of the indoor concentration level ranged from 9.250 Bqm-3 to 18.870 Bqm-3 with an average of 13.32±1.02 Bqm-3, Nkpogu (NK) town, the indoor concentration level ranged from 7.030 Bqm-3 to 20.350 Bqm-3 with an average of 12.25±1.34Bqm-3. The annual absorbed dose for Azuabie, Trans-Amadi and Nkpogu varied as follows, 1.680 mSvy-1 – 3.921 mSvy-1, 2.334 mSvy-1 – 47610 mSvy-1 and 1.774 mSvy-2 – 5.134 mSvy-1 respectively. The annual effect dose rate for the three towns ranged from 0.403 mSvy-1 – 0.941mSvy-1, 0.560 mSvy-1 - 1.143 mSvy-1 and 0.426 mSvy-1 – 1.143mSvy-1. The excess life time cancer risk varied from 1.4117 – 3.294, 1.9607 – 3.999 and 1.4901 – 3.999 respectively. The results of the indoor concentration levels annual and the absorbed dose and the annual effective dose rate are all below the ICRP safe limit. However, the results of the excess life time cancer risk are all higher than the ICRP safe standard limit of 0.029×10-3.

It has become critical to build a de-stoning machine that can be used in our homes whenever we need it. As a result, the goal of this research was to develop and build a wet-method household rice destoning equipment. The design was built utilizing locally accessible materials and was based on the notion of material separation using water as a medium of separation. A reservoir, hopper, de-stoning chamber, washing chamber, impeller, water filter, and brush drum make up the machine. The produced machine was powered by a 1 horsepower variable electric motor that communicated the rotating motion of the driving pulley to the driven pulley, which was supported by bearings, through a V-belt. The machine was built and tested, and it was discovered that 2kg/10minutes and 20.04kg/hour of processed rice were destoned at a de-stoning speed of 400rpm, which is the optimal speed for maximum speed separation. The destoning machine's effectiveness in terms of stone removal is approximately approaching 100 percent free of impurities, making it ideal for residential usage. This discovery elucidates the potential to deal with the challenges of stone removal from locally produced rice using hand and manual method, which are inefficient, time and energy wastage, it acts as a rice processing industry innovation.

The process of winnowing grains such as SORGHUM has been widely done manually in a lot of developing countries, such as Nigeria and this comes with a lot of stress and reduced output/productivity hence the need to develop a machine that will ease such burdens so that there is a better productivity and a reduced human effort in the winnowing process. As such, an electric-powered sorghum winnowing machine was designed and fabricated with locally sourced materials to ensure ease of maintenance and at no compromise to its efficiency and reliability. The machine component parts include the blower, hopper, feed gate, lever, and the machine frame. Sorghum sample was tested with the machine for operational effectiveness and the result shows that the machine has a winnowing capacity of 530kg/hr and a winnowing efficiency of 96%. The fabricated winnowing machine performed well with high winnowing efficiency, reliability, and durability with an estimated cost of $450. It was also discovered that the cost of winnowing 1kg sorghum is highly encouraging. The study was carried out in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. A performance evaluation was carried out on the machine and a cleaning efficiency of 96% was achieved.
