Radon interventions around the globe: A systematic review

Abstract: Background Radon is the primary source of environmental radiation exposure posing a significant human health risk in cold countries. In Canada, most provinces have revised building codes by 2017, requiring construction solutions to avoid radon in all new buildings. While various construction solutions and remediation techniques have been proposed and evaluated, the question about the best method that would effectively reduce radon in a variety of contexts remained unanswered. Radon practitioners, … Show more

“…However, high residential radon levels often can be lowered via less costly (albeit less effective) interventions that restrict the entry of radon gas into the home, for example, via sealing cracks in the floor and gaskets that cover sump pumps. 19 Economic assistance in radon remediation may be available in some areas via Community Development Block Grants (CDBGs) and other federal programs. 20 Because mobile homes typically are 1 foot or more above the ground, the average radon levels in mobile homes is low.…”

“…The method of choice for mitigation depends on the required reduction factor and the type of floor [32,33]. In general, the best way in which to lower radon levels is to reduce the pressure difference that draws radon into a building [32] but structural interventions are not quick to apply and their feasibility depending by several factors including construction characteristics.…”

“…Coskeran, Denman [13] developed a study that demonstrates that, for low radon level, installing a radon proof membrane may be cost-effective in addressing the dangers to health [13]. In many cases, this method is applied with other remedial technique, as a secondary method [14,15].…”

“…An experimental study on ventilation system in suburban buildings is presented by Merzkirch, Maas [16]. The system overall revealed strong interdependancies among all measured pollutants leading to a highly improved air features and a good comfort [15][16][17].…”
