Radon measurements along active faults in the Langadas Basin, northern Greece

Abstract: Abstract. A network of three radon stations has been established in the Langadas Basin, northern Greece for radon monitoring by various techniques in earthquake prediction studies. Specially made devices with plastic tubes including Alpha Tracketch Detectors (ATD) were installed for registering alpha particles from radon and radon decay products exhaled from the ground, every 2 weeks, by using LR-115, type II, non-strippable Kodak films, starting from December 1996. Simultaneous measurements started using Luca… Show more

“…While measurements have been performed in spas (Danali et al, 1986), caves (Papachristodoulou et al, 2004), active faults (Papastefanou et al, 2001) and mines (Georgiou et al, 1988), literature on indoor levels in dwellings is not very extensive (Clouvas et al, 2007(Clouvas et al, , 2011Geranios et al, 2001;Ioannides et al, 2000;Nikolopoulos et al, 2002). Measurements of Rn emanation have been performed in Greek cement constituents (Maraziotis, 1987) and building materials (Papastefanou et al, 1984;Siotis and Wrixon, 1984).…”

“…The use of radon for monitoring of volcanic activities (Sato, 2003), environmental research, mapping of fault zones, prediction of earthquakes, geological traces has been developed mainly with uranium (Ioannides et al, 2003). There have been various researches dealing with the measurements of radon concentration in soil, gas emanating from the ground along active faults, which may provide useful signals before seismic events (Papastefanou et al, 2001;Durrani and Ilić, 1997). Radon tends to migrate from its source mainly upwards.…”

“…The characteristic high concentrations of radon over faults reflect gas migration dominated by brittle deformation both at macro-and/or micro-scale. Therefore spatial patterns of soil-gas radon in faulted areas appear to be suitable tools for identifying and mapping active tectonic structures (Crenshaw et al, 1982;Cox, 1983;Cox and Cuff, 1981;Williams, 1985;Ciotoli et al, 1998Ciotoli et al, , 1999Papastefanou et al, 2001;Baubron et al, 2002). Burton et al (2004) used soil-gas radon concentrations to map active faults, as faults and fractures in the underlying rocks provide paths of high permeability and therefore serve as conduits for radon gas migration.…”
