Random perturbation: A potential aid in treatment of children with cerebral palsy

Abstract: The addition of RP in treatment of children with CP may have weakened previously established stereotypical motor patterns and introduced flexibility, thereby improving mechanical efficiency of a complex motor task. RP may enhance the effects of intensive treatment.

“…The aim of RAC CP Fun, and the main contribution of this paper, is to implement rehabilitation and treatment approaches for children with CP, which have been extensively explored in the last two decades (see, for example, Bar-Haim et al, 84 Shadmehr et al 85 ) and that are based on repetition of training, appropriate feedback, stages of learning, random practice to enhance problem solving, and enriched environment. Motor learning coaching treatment results in significantly greater retention of gross motor function and transfer of mobility rehabilitation approaches.…”

“…Downs and Black scores are presented in Supplemental Table S1. Study quality ranged from low (14 of 32) 24 to moderate (⩾16–23) 22,23,2527 to high (⩾24) 18,19 according to Downs and Black scores. Participants could not be blinded due to the nature of cycling interventions; however, only three RCTs ensured adequate blinding of the assessors.…”

“…Participants could not be blinded due to the nature of cycling interventions; however, only three RCTs ensured adequate blinding of the assessors. 18,19,23 Randomization was violated in one study as some participants were too small to use an elliptical device and were subsequently re-allocated to the cycling group. 26 Greater than 70% adherence to the intervention was reported in five studies, 18,19,22,26,28 while the remaining four did not report compliance.…”
