“…The present study shows that daily consumption of a combination of elderberry and reishi extracts during the winter season is effective in reducing the duration and severity of respiratory infections in elderly people. Several clinical studies have shown the beneficial immunological effect of elderberry [12,13] and reishi [24], but to our knowledge, this is the first study that evaluated the combined effect of both extracts on the incidence, severity, and duration of respiratory infections in older adults, a population group at increased risk of this type of infection and a worse prognosis of the disease [5].…”

“…Regarding the reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), it has been observed in vitro and in animal studies that the triterpenoids contained in the reishi exert anti-influenza activity by neuraminidase inhibition [35,36]. Moreover, a recent clinical study reported that a yogurt enriched with β-glucans from reishi increased the absolute count of peripheral blood total lymphocytes (CD3 + , CD4 + , and CD8 + T cells) compared to a nonenriched yogurt in a group of healthy children [24]. Therefore, the results achieved in this randomized clinical trial could be related to the observed immunomodulatory and antiviral activities of elderberry and reishi.…”

“…Multiple myeloma patients receiving a combination of extracts of AB, GF, and Hericium erinaceus exhibited an increase in regulatory T cells and plasmacytoid dendritic cells, while concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNFα) did not change significantly when compared to placebo (Tangen et al, 2015). Healthy children receiving β-glucan (isolated from GL) in yoghurt showed significantly higher levels of circulating CD8+ T cells without a significant increase in cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, and TNF-α (Henao, Urrego, Cano, & Higuita, 2018). A small study evaluating immune cell function in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes showed improved neutrophil and monocyte function in those patients receiving a GF extract compared to a placebo group, although cytokine concentrations were not assessed (Wesa et al, 2015).…”

“…The use of β-glucan from Ganoderma lucidum mushrooms as part of therapeutic yogurt allows for protecting the body of children aged 3–5 years from infectious diseases [ 72 ], and its consumption in the amount of 1% with Plukenetia volubilis seeds in yogurt based on skimmed milk powder significantly improves organoleptic properties, even though there was some reduction in rheological characteristics [ 113 ]. This dose allows to simulate the presence of fat in yogurt and brings it closer to the control sample in terms of taste perception.…”
