Randomized Comparison of Balloon Dilation and Transurethral Incision for Treatment of Symptomatic Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia*

Abstract: The concept of relieving the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) by dilating the urethral has existed for centuries. Thirty patients with a clinically estimated prostate gland size of 25 g or less were randomized to either balloon dilation (BDP) or transurethral incision of the prostate (TUIP). The mean pretreatment Madsen-Iverson symptom scores in the two groups were 15.0 +/- 4.9 (SD) and 15.4 +/- 4.4, respectively. The early response rates were 87% fo BDP and 86% for TUIP, with the mean symptom sc… Show more

“…Our results are consistent with a previous meta‐analysis, which assessed EjD of five of the seven TUIP studies we included . The reported RE rate was strongly in favor of TUIP, with 21% ( n = 14/67) versus TURP 73% ( n = 52/72, P < 0.0001).…”

“…6,52 Our results are consistent with a previous meta-analysis, 53 which assessed EjD of five of the seven TUIP studies we included. 6,7,15,[50][51][52] The reported RE rate was strongly in favor of TUIP, with 21% (n = 14/67) versus TURP 73% (n = 52/72, P < 0.0001). By adding the evidence of Abd-El Kader, RE remains significantly lower for TUIP, with an overall 21.1% (n = 24/114) RE versus as much as 64.6% (n = 73/113) in the TURP group.…”

“…Tears or splits are produced through the stroma along the length of the prostate but not through the bladder neck. It produces good short‐term results with symptom reduction comparable to TUIP, but studies show the results to be short lived, with symptoms recurring in most men after 6 weeks to 2 years 87 . In view of this evidence it is not recommended by most urologists.…”
