Randomized controlled clinical trial comparing one‐piece and two‐piece dental implants supporting fixed and removable dental prostheses: 4‐ to 6‐year observations

Abstract: Both implant systems reveal high survival rates on the implant and prosthetic level. Apart from marginal bone-level changes, biological and technical outcomes did not reveal significant differences between the two implant systems.

“…The present investigation was designed as a non‐interventional 5‐year follow‐up clinical trial based on two prospective studies with patients treated at the Clinic of Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics and Dental Material Science Center of Dental Medicine, University of Zürich, Switzerland (Ebler, Ioannidis, Jung, Hammerle, & Thoma, ; Gamper et al., ; local ethics committee numbers: 2013‐0121, 2014‐0201). The patients had been treated using either one of four implant systems: AST (Astra Tech Osseospeed ® ; ASTRA TECH implant system, DENTSPLY Implants, Mölndal, Sweden), STMBL (Straumann Bone Level Implants ® ; Institute Straumann AG, Basel, Switzerland), BRA (Brånemark MKIII or MKIV; Nobel Biocare, Zürich, Switzerland) and STMTL (Institute Straumann AG).…”

“…In addition, implant dimensions in terms of length and diameter changed and further increased the spectrum of indications. Based on 124 partially edentulous patients treated in same University setting, the mean implant length gradually changed from 12 mm (implants placed between 2002 and 2005; Gamper et al., ) to 10 mm (implants placed in 2009; Ebler, Ioannidis, Jung, Hammerle, & Thoma, ) within 5 years.…”

“…Patients were selected by the following criteria: patients who had been treated by both one‐piece and two‐piece dental implants; dental implants were inserted at least 3 months ago and no more than 12 months ago; dental implants were loaded; dental implants without any signs of inflammation (Gamper et al, ): no bleeding on probing, probing depth ≤5 mm, no excessive resorption of marginal bone around dental implant (<2 mm), and no exudate; and patients without any systemic health problems and not using any medication for at least 3 months. …”
