Randomized controlled trials – a matter of design

Abstract: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are the hallmark of evidence-based medicine and form the basis for translating research data into clinical practice. This review summarizes commonly applied designs and quality indicators of RCTs to provide guidance in interpreting and critically evaluating clinical research data. It further reflects on the principle of equipoise and its practical applicability to clinical science with an emphasis on critical care and neurological research. We performed a review of education… Show more

“…The characteristics of a specific disability determine the nature of the SIP. For example, for children with autism spectrum disorder, water sports are considered a suitable exercise [25][26][27], while for individuals with Down Syndrome, the most used SIPs consist of cycling, movement and dance, strength and agility, and balance training [28]. Nevertheless, SIPs have been revealed to be especially suitable to enhance socialization by creating an inclusive environment that accommodates individual differences.…”

“…Nevertheless, RCT remains the gold standard for assessing drug efficacy [72]. When results from the completion of such a study could be finally available, they will finally shed light on the role on BB in TNBC treatment.…”

“…To our knowledge, this is the first full scale RCT study evaluating an online mindset intervention developed for adolescents with intellectual disabilities. RCT studies are considered the gold standard for evaluating efficacy in clinical research [ 69 ]. In addition, in contrast to the most RCT studies, we will not only focus on the effectiveness of the program, but also on the moderating and mediating factors of change (i.e., for whom and how the intervention works).…”
