Range Improvement following Chaining of South Texas Mixed Brush

Abstract: Double chainingfollowed by raking and stacking hea* stands of south Texas mixed brush was more effective than double chaining alone or chaining one way, based on compararive degree 01 brush control, range forage production, and fomge consumption by livestock. In a brush stand composed primarily of honey mesquite, spiny hackberry, and lime pricklyash, double chaining followed by raking and stacking reduced woody plant densities by 88%. increased oven-dq forage production by owr 1,600 kg/ha, and increased forage… Show more

“…Untreated sites, one 1,140 ha and one 679 ha, consisted of undisturbed brush with small areas that were chained during 1976. Chaining in south Texas brushlands reportedly does not significantly reduce woody plant diversity (Scifres et al 1976).…”

“…Greater canopy cover of herbaceous vegetation 16 to 18 years after root plowing was similar to the short-term observations of Drawe (1977) on the Texas coastal prairies. Double chaining and raking in south Texas (Scifres et al 1976) and double chaining in central Texas (Rollins and Bryant 1986) also resulted in increased herbaceous coverage.…”

“…For example, Celtis and Aloysia possessed the most morphologically distinct variants of the root crown sprouting trait, and developed larger canopies than the other species following stem removal. Other studies in the region have documented similar and longer-term increases in relative canopy cover for Celtis and Aloysia in stands regenerating from simple top removal (Scifres, Mutz & Durham 1976;Koerth et al 1989). The relatively large root crowns of these two species, may provide increased surface area for subterranean meristems as well as an increased volume of stored nutrients required for regrowth.…”

“…With the development of heavy machinery in the mid -twentieth century, South Texas landowners began to convert these thorn woodlands back to grasslands to benefit livestock production. Mechanical treatments effectively manage woody vegetation and enhance herbaceous vegetation (Scifres et al 1976, Bozzo et al 1992a. Total plant removal methods such as root plowing are the most effective in managing woody plants (Allison and Rechenthin 1956) and have an extended treatment life (Welch et al 1985).…”

“…Mechanical top removal methods such as chaining (Scifres et al 1976) and roller chopping (Fulbright and Beasom 1987) are less destructive of woody plant diversity than root plowing, but treatment life is generally short (Welch et al 1985).…”
