In this overview we describe the main plant-derived bioactive compounds used in cancer therapy which has the cell cytoskeleton as therapeutic target. Three major classes of these compounds are described: antimitotics with microtubule-destabilizing and-stabilizing efects, plant-bioactive compounds that interact with intermediate ilaments/actin, and plant-bioactive compounds that interact with intermediate ilaments like keratins and vimentin. We also focus on the molecular aspects of interactions with their cellular targets: microtubules, intermediate ilaments, and microilaments. Some critical aspects of cardiac side efects of cancer chemotherapy are also discussed, focusing on cardiac cytoskeleton and protective efect of plant-derived compounds. The application of plant bioactives in the treatment of cancer has resulted in increased therapeutic eicacy through targeting the cytoskeleton, respectively, prevention of the injury of cytoskeletal components elicited by chemotherapeutics.

Alkaloids are a widespread group of basic compounds in herbal medicines and have attracted great interest due to various pharmaceutical activities and desirable druggability. Their distinctive structures make chromatographic separation fairly difficult. Peak tailing, poor resolution, and inferior column‐to‐column reproducibility are common obstacles to overcome. In order to provide a valuable reference, the methodologies and/or strategies on liquid chromatographic separation of alkaloids in herbal medicines proposed from 2012 to 2019 are thoroughly summarized.

Multiway data analysis and tensorial calibration are gaining widespread acceptance with the rapid development of multichannel chromatographic instruments. By combining chromatographic techniques with chemometrics based on high-order calibration methods, some traditional problems in analysis, such as complicated pretreatment steps, long elution times, or even worse analysis results, can be avoided/improved. This chapter presents an overview from second-order to third-order data that cover theories and applications together with corresponding data processing in chromatography.
