Rapid annotation of interictal epileptiform discharges via template matching under Dynamic Time Warping

Abstract: Background EEG interpretation relies on experts who are in short supply. There is a great need for automated pattern recognition systems to assist with interpretation. However, attempts to develop such systems have been limited by insufficient expert-annotated data. To address these issues, we developed a system named NeuroBrowser for EEG review and rapid waveform annotation. New Methods At the core of NeuroBrowser lies on ultrafast template matching under Dynamic Time Warping, which substantially accelerate… Show more

“…We observe that data series similarity is often domain-and visualization-dependent [8,37], and in many situations, analysts depend on time-consuming manual analysis processes. For example, neuroscientists manually inspect the EEG data of their patients, using visual analysis tools, so as to identify patterns of interest [37,45]. In such cases, it is important to have techniques that operate within interactive response times [63], in order to enable analysts to complete their tasks easily and quickly.…”

“…methods have been described for template matching and some reports have described their use in medical practice. 17,18 Further developments are anticipated, and it could be expected that the accuracy of template matching would be improved with an increased number of plasma samples included for template preparation. In addition, alternative deep learning systems utilizing artificial intelligence, currently appear to be offering advances for the diagnosis and management of a variety of pathological disorders.…”

“…We used Neurobroswer [8] to annotate TPWs for each patient; this retrospective analysis of EEG data was carried out under an IRB approved protocol. The inter-event-interval (IEI) is defined as the interval between peaks of consecutive TPW.…”
