Rapid chondrolysis after arthroscopic partial lateral meniscectomy in athletes: a case report

Abstract: We present a patient with a severe chondrolysis after arthroscopic partial lateral meniscectomy in a 17-year-old high school basketball player. This is a rare but severe complication after arthroscopic partial lateral meniscectomy. At 7 months after the first operation, a second-look arthroscopy showed numerous cartilaginous debris floating in the knee and a high-grade cartilage damage on the lateral compartment of the tibia. This unexpected complication and a consideration of its etiology are shown.

“…A few studies have raised concerns that partial lateral meniscectomy may be related to rapid chondrolysis (Alford et al, 2005;Ishida et al, 2006;Mariani et al, 2008). Recently, the first case report was published of rapid chondrolysis following a deep radial tear in the lateral meniscus that was conservatively treated (Thaunat et al, 2014).…”

“…As has already been stated, lateral meniscectomy has more serious and greater consequences than medial meniscectomy. Indeed, there have been some case reports of severe lateral compartmental degeneration/arthritis developing very rapidly in young athletes who continue to train/compete at high levels after lateral meniscectomy 13. For this reason, if a deep radial tear in the lateral meniscus is found at arthroscopy with young athletes, then an attempt at meniscal repair is justified.…”

“…In addition, although rare, severe complications such as rapid chondrolysis have been reported after partial meniscectomy in athletes. 5 , 6 Consequently, in consideration of surgical option for meniscal tears in athletes, recent trend has been shifted to preservation of meniscal function as much as possible.…”
