Rapid Detection of Bloodstream Pathogens in Oncologic Patients with a FilmArray Multiplex PCR Assay: a Comparison with Culture Methods

Abstract: The results of the FilmArray® Blood Culture Identification Panel (BCID) (BioFire Diagnostics) and the culture with susceptibility testing of 70 positive blood cultures from oncologic patients were compared. The multiplex PCR assay (BCID) identified 81 of the 83 isolates (97.6%), covered by the panel. The panel produced results in significantly shorter time than standard identification methods, when counted from receiving positive blood cultures bottles to the final results. It is an accurate method for the rap… Show more

“…4,63 Although 2 studies have validated the use of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight and multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR), specifically BioFire FilmArray blood culture identification (BCID), in oncology patients, there are limited data that demonstrate the clinical impact of RDTs in this population. 64,65…”

Of the 684 patients with a positive blood culture and Gram-positive cocci in clusters, 299 were identified as likely contaminants because of coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS).…”

“…The clinical impact on cancer patients from rapid microbiological diagnostic tests, for example BioFire ® FilmArray ® sepsis panel (BCID) or MALDITOF (Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization—Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry), have limited data [ 25 , 26 ]. A quasi-experimental study reported by Buss et al [ 27 ] analyzed the impact of BCID in treating bacteremia in cancer patients over a 4-year period.…”

“…FILMArray Blood Culture Identification Panel (BioFire Diagnostics, Salt Lake City, UT) uses a PCR strategy to screen for a panel of 24 bacterial and fungal pathogens, and 3 antibacterial resistance genes, from positive blood cultures, with strong performance against reference standards and a turnaround time of around 1 hour. 4,[117][118][119] It has also been used to directly examine CSF and bronchoalveolar lavage samples, without the need to wait for positive cultures. 118,120…”
