Rapid Detection of Mycoplasma bovis, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae in Cattle Bulk Tank Milk in Cyprus and Relations with Somatic Cell Counts

Abstract: One hundred and seventy-seven (177) bulk tank milk samples were analyzed with a commercially available real-time polymerase chain reaction kit and 11 (6.21%), 41 (23.16%), and 58 (32.77%) tested positive for Mycoplasma bovis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus agalactiae, respectively. Statistical analysis revealed a significant relationship between the presence of S. aureus and S. agalactiae. Enumeration of somatic cells was performed in the same samples by flow cytometry. The somatic cell counts were f… Show more

“…This study has revealed novel perspectives on the occurrence of M. bovis in dairy cow herds in Serbia. M. bovis DNA was identified in 11 BTM samples (9.67%), consistent with findings from other countries [ 12 , 26 , 27 ]. In Denmark, however, only 2% of the BTM samples tested positive for M. bovis DNA [ 28 ].…”

“…Comparatively, the recovery rate of M. bovis recorded in the present study was 51.5% which was higher than that found in BTM in both Cyprus at 6.25% and Canada at 0.53% [35].…”

“…and E. coli was 61% each from all bulk tank milk (BTM) using rt-PCR. Additionally, the recovery rate of S. aureus in the current study (81.8%) was higher than reported previously in Egypt 29.1%, 35.9% [19,32], 24.4% [33], Turkey 26.1% [34], but lower than those reported in Denmark 91% [35].…”

“…ST8 could be considered as a European one, as it has been described in Hungary and Lithuania ( 40 ) and in Spain ( 39 ) and is the dominant subtype encountered in France ( 41 ). In the database, ST29 only contains isolates from Israel and one from Hungary ( 40 ), whereas it has been largely reported in Europe, including Cyprus ( 42 ), Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and Sweden ( 41 ). The other closest subtypes (S12, ST21, and ST100) have also been found in these Nordic European countries (adding Estonia) and France ( 41 ).…”
