Rapid determination of technetium-99 by automatic solid phase extraction and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

Abstract: Technetium-99 (99Tc) is a key nuclide, produced by the fission of uranium-235 (235U) and plutonium-239 (239Pu), through a cascade decay process, and is one kind of target element in environmental analysis due to its long half-life (t1/2 = 2.1 × 105 years).

“…Numerous studies have addressed the utilization of solid-phase extraction (SPE) approaches as a means to separate and enrich 99 Tc prior to analysis via ICP–QMS. In particular, the commercially available TEVA resin has been widely used as the SPE resin for separating 99 Tc prior to ICP–MS analysis. The typical protocol of TEVA resin requires acidic conditions (0.05–0.1 M HNO 3 ) in the adsorption of 99 Tc onto the resin; in contrast, highly acidic conditions (6.5–8 M) are required for its elution.…”

“…For example, the system is useful for monitoring radioactivity during the decommissioning of nuclear power plants. In spite of this, relatively few studies have reported online SPE (TEVA resin)–ICP–MS methods for 99 Tc analysis. ,,, The primary reasons for this can be attributed to the difficulties involved in the direct introduction of eluate into ICP–MS (after SPE). Numerous challenges have been identified.…”

“…Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has been widely used for the determination of trace levels of Au and other metals, [4][5][6] because it offers exceptional sensitivity and/or higher throughput than other elemental analysis techniques, such as atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), and total reection X-ray uorescence spectrometry (TXRFS). Unfortunately, the direct analysis of geological samples via ICP-MS is a challenging task because of (i) the presence of signicant oxides and hydroxides of matrix metals (i.e.…”
