Rapid integrated rheo-optical and polarized Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry measurement system for polymer films undergoing chemo-mechanical changes

Abstract: The design and performance of a multisensory instrument to track physical and chemical changes of thin polymer films (typically 5 μm < thickness < 100 μm) subjected to thermal and mechanical treatments are described in this paper. For the first time, real-time measurements of spectral birefringence, true stress, true strain, and temperature are integrated together with ultra-rapid-scan polarized FT-IR spectrometer (URS-FT-IR) to investigate the relationships between true mechanical measures and structural feat… Show more

“…Details of the instrument are described elsewhere. 64 The real-time stress, strain, and spectral birefringence were recorded and calculated in the same manner as described in the previous section. Additionally, a disk mirror interferometer was used to record the infrared (IR) absorbance at a rate of 300 spectra/s.…”

“…A real-time mechano-optical measurement platform equipped with an ultrarapid-scan polarized FTIR spectrometer was used to probe the deformation behavior of polymer segments in the crystalline and amorphous domains separately. Details of the measurement technique are discussed elsewhere . In brief, the specimen was clamped to load cells in the uniaxial stretching machine and enclosed within a thermal chamber.…”

“…Details of the measurement technique are discussed elsewhere. 13 In brief, the specimen was clamped to load cells in the uniaxial stretching machine and enclosed within a thermal chamber. The stress−strain curves were calculated from the measured force and the true cross-sectional area of the deformed specimen, which was determined by measuring the real-time width of the specimen and assuming an incompressible deformation with transverse isotropy.…”

“…Real-time birefringence is measured by spectral birefringence method. The in-plane and out-of-plane birefringence is calculated by measuring the 0° and 45° retardation values. The optical light paths for these measurements are shown with yellow transparent tubes in the figure below.…”
