Rapid Preparation of Silsesquioxane‐Based Ionic Liquids

Abstract: Three new hybrid ionic liquids (ILs) based on cage silsesquioxane (SQ) were rapidly prepared in high yields from octa(mercaptopropyl)silsesquioxane and 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium salts (Br(-), BF4(-), PF6(-)) through the photochemical thiol-ene reaction. These SQ-based ILs exhibited low glass transition temperatures and good thermal stability. The unique amphiphilic nature of these hybrid ILs cause them to self-assemble into perfect vesicles with "yolk-shell" structures, in which cages formed the "yolk" due t… Show more

“…The elemental analysis data of both POSS-SH and POSS-S-PA are as follows: POSS-SH: Calculated-C 47.9, H 9.39 and S 42.67; found-C 47.82, H 10.20 and S 42.60%; POSS-S-PA: Calculated-C 45.35, H 6.82, O 33.80 and S 14.03; found-C 45.12, H 6.82, O 33.98 and S 14.08%. These observations are strongly consistent with earlier results [25,26].…”

“…Octavinylsilsesquioxane (OVS) is a versatile precursor, and has been explored extensively as a potential starting material for nanohybrid synthesis because it is rigid, highly functional, and exceptionally robust with respect to heat and water . OVS has also been used to prepare hybrid porous polymers through various methods such as free radical polymerization, the Heck reaction, and the Friedel–Crafts reaction .…”

“…[13] Octavinylsilsesquioxane (OVS) is av ersatilep recursor,a nd has been explored extensively as ap otentials tartingm aterial for nanohybrid synthesis because it is rigid, highly functional, and exceptionally robust with respect to heat and water. [14][15][16][17][18][19][20] OVS hasa lso been used to prepare hybrid porous polymers through various methodssuch as free radicalpolymerization, [21] the Heck reaction, [22] and the Friedel-Crafts reaction. [23,24] The introduction of rigid and bulky cage units into luminescent molecules can inhibit aggregation and improve the fluorescence quantum efficiency.…”

“…Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) is an effective building block for preparation of nanomaterials and giant molecules . The rigid and cubic structure of POSS derivatives contributes to its high mechanical strength, and the organic moieties of the POSS compounds provide chemical reactivity and organo‐compatibility in formation of POSS/polymer nanocomposites.…”

“…Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) is an effective building block for preparation of nanomaterials [16][17][18][19][20] and giant molecules. [21,22] The rigid and cubic structure of POSS derivatives contributes to its high mechanical strength, and the organic moieties of the POSS compounds provide chemical reactivity and organo-compatibility methacrylated POSS compound (MMA-POSS, commercial product purchased from Hybrid Plastics Co., Fountain Valley, CA) and elemental sulfur (S 8 , 99.5% in sublimed power from Alfa Aesar) in diethylene glycol dimethyl ether (diglyme, 99.5% from Sigma-Aldrich) through the "inverse vulcanization" process reported by Pyun's group in 2015.…”
