“…In recent years explorations for natural gas and oil have been carried out along the Israeli coast of the Mediterra-nean (sometimes in proximity to these sponge grounds), with the aim of this area becoming a center for the petroleum industry. Thus, drilling lubricants and thin sediment suspended in the water column from such excavations could cover and clog the filtering apparatus of the sponges (Gerrodette et al, 1979;Tompkins-MacDonald et al, 2008;Tjensvoll et al, 2013;Edge et al, 2016). In addition, fishermen off the Israeli coast are deploying a new type of gear for deep bottom-trawling, which is specially designed to operate over rocky outcrops and can be destructive to this sensitive community.…”

“…Results from this study and records of sponge by-catch from the IMR ground fish trawl surveys (Tjensvoll et al, 2013) support earlier findings that demosponges can occur at very high abundances in the northern Atlantic, particularly on the continental shelf breaks, in areas favorable for settlement, growth and food supply of suspension feeding fauna (Bett, 2001;Klitgaard and Tendal, 2004;Murillo et al 2012). Total sponge abundance and biomass in Traenadypet almost reached that of the sponge populations of tropical barrier reefs where sponges are regarded as key organisms in the ecosystems and have been intensively studied (Wilkinson and Cheshire, 1990;Bannister et al 2007Bannister et al , 2010Whalan et al, 2007a, b).…”

“…Assuming that the average biomass of G. barretti found in the examined plots is representative of the whole MPA the results suggests that within this 300 km 2 area the population of G. barretti could filter 250 million m 3 of water and consume 60 t of carbon each 24 h and through this have a considerable influence on carbon and nutrient cycling in the benthic boundary layer (BBL). The dominance of demosponges in several regions of the Norwegian shelf merits further investigations quantifying nutrient dynamics of Norwegian sponge aggregations (Zenkevitch, 1963;Klitgaard and Tendal, 2004;Tjensvoll et al, 2013).…”

“…During the cruise, five specimen of G. barretti were collected with the ROV, and their individual volume (through water displacement) and wet weight was measured. Dry weight biomass was calculated from wet weight using a 0.2 conversion factor determined from previous measurements on Geodia sponges (Tjensvoll et al, 2013;Kutti et al, 2014).…”
