Rapid reversible phototuning of lasing frequency in dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystal

Abstract: Lasing in induced cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) containing highly photosensitive azo chiral dopant (ChD) and pyrromethene laser dye was investigated. Due to the absence of excitation energy transfer from the dye molecules to the molecules of ChD in such a system, a low lasing threshold was achieved. When using violet and green lightemitting diodes, reversible frequency tuning was obtained in the range of about 30 nm with a tuning time 1-2 orders of magnitude smaller than in conventional CLC laser systems ba… Show more

“…4,5 In the presence of a gain medium, laser action can occur at the photonic bandedge(s) through optical excitation-usually termed the bandedge lasing. To date, a great deal of effort has been devoted to achieve a wide dynamic tuning range of the lasing wavelength with the aid of external inputs, such as electric field 6,7 , heat 8,9 , light 10 , and mechanical stress 11 . However, the post-2 fabrication selection between the LWE and SWE lasing modes is seldom discussed 12,13 .…”

“…6 (curve 2 ) was obtained for 148 ms, which is three orders of magnitude less than the time of a phototuning with the use of the previously used azo-and azoxy-liquid crystalline materials. It should be noted that a more non-linear curve of the phototuning and a further increase in the phototuning speed can be obtained by increasing the concentration of the twisting dopant Li-7 [14].…”

“…The distinction is caused firstly by the major difference in the absorptions for both conformers on the band maxima for 350 and 410 nm. Recently, with the help of a highly photosensitive azo chiral dopant and a low-power green laser illumination, a record value of phototuning rate ( §21 nm for 148 ms) was obtained [69].…”
