Rapidly growing giant pilomatricoma in the right parotid region of a pregnant woman

Abstract: Pilomatricoma is a benign tumor arising from the primitive basal cells of the epidermis that differentiate into hair matrix cells. Mutations in the CTNNB1 gene, which encodes β-catenin (a protein involved in hair growth), play an etiological role in the development of pilomatricoma. A 34-yearold woman presenting with a mass in the right parotid region underwent an excisional biopsy. The mass was conclusively diagnosed as pilomatricoma. During pregnancy, the mass grew from 1 cm to 5 cm in diameter and was accom… Show more

“…Generally, pilomatrixoma is a hard, freely mobile, slowgrowing mass covered by skin. Patients are asymptomatic, although in some cases pilomatrixoma may present with symptoms, such as pain, pruritus or discharge in lesions [5][6][7], which makes the diagnosis more difficult. In our study, five clinical types of pilomatrixoma presentation were established according to the characteristic appearance of the lesions.…”

“…Since soft tissue osteomas are not common, they can be misdiagnosed as pilomatrixoma [ 11 ] or tumors of bone origin. To avoid such misdiagnoses, preoperative computed tomography imaging and excisional biopsy are vital.…”
