Rapidly Growing Mycobacterial Infections After Pedicures

Abstract: Background: Rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM) can cause a variety of cutaneous and systemic diseases. The causative organisms are typically Mycobacterium fortuitum or Mycobacterium chelonae (also known as Mycobacterium abscessus). Primary cutaneous lesions may develop after a variable latent period, from weeks to several months, and usually result from direct inoculation after trauma, from injections, or during surgery via contaminated medical instruments. Recently, investigators from the Centers for Disease … Show more

“…This species has been isolated previously from a water distribution system (51), tap water (12), treated surface water or groundwater (25), nail salon water (35), and public swimming pools (31). M. chelonae is an opportunistic pathogen that is able to cause pulmonary infections, cutaneous infections (35), or iatrogenic infections after surgery or subcutaneous injection (7,33). Consequently, its presence in the water supply catchment may be a concern for water production in Paris.…”

“…The outbreak was associated with pedicures that involved the use of contaminated whirlpool footbaths. M. fortuitum was identified as the etiologic agent, and isolates from the patients and the footbaths were indistinguishable by pulsed-field gel (11). We report two cases of furunculosis caused by M. mageritense acquired from whirlpool footbaths in a nail salon in Georgia.…”

“…All these species identified in Cote d`Ivoire are responsible for skin ulcerations in some countries as reported by Zamarioli et al (2008) and Buijtels et al 2009. M. chelonae, is responsible for skin soft tissue infections as reported by Sniezek et al (2003), M. abscessus responsible for skin and soft tissue infections with abscess formation or skin nodules, often appearing after trauma or surgical operation with infected materials (Griffith et al 2007). Among the isolated strains, 20% were carriers of the gene IS2404, they include M. mucogenicum, M. peregrinum and Mycobacterium sp.…”

“…They are found in the environment like in the soil, water, aerosols, plants, aquatic animals (Winthrop et al, 2002;Sniezek et Marsollier et al, 2002Marsollier et al, , 2004. This Acid-Alcohol Bacillus Resistant (AFB) are not mandatory pathogens and for several years, the scientific community have not really shown interest in their study, but rather devoted to the study of TB epidemic.…”
