In Moldova like in other countries of Eastern Europe, a fertility transition is taking place from the traditional model to the modern one which is associated with the decrease of juncture-related fertility indicators. Although the fertility indicators are higher compared to those of other states, the factors determining this level and the possible future trends are an important question to be asked. We assume, some of the socio-demographic characteristics of women, particularities of the socio-economic and cultural context have an impact on the reproductive behavior and determine either to keep the traditional model or switch to the modern one. To answer this questions, a research was conducted to highlight the differences in women’s reproductive behavior in Moldova as well as the socio-demographic characteristics which make the difference between the fertility level and the number of children born during the reproductive age (living environment, education level, first sexual intercourse, mean age of first marriage, mean age of mothers at first birth, first-birth and interbirth intervals). The research is based on the data of the demographic study Generation and Sex conducted in Moldova in 2020 where a subsample of 1546 women aged 20-49 was selected. A special typology was elaborated through a hierarchical cluster analysis and the women were divided in 4 groups according to characteristics of the reproductive behavior. It was found that the traditional model of reproductive behavior prevails in Moldova, two subgroups being emphasized: “traditional with large family” and “traditional with maximum two children”. A middle group is represented by women displaying “transitory to modern” reproductive behavior model. The least numerous group is made up of women characterized by “modern” behavior.

Understanding intergenerational transfers of childcare is crucial in the context of declining birth rates, changing family structures, and population aging. Informal assistance in childcare is highly significant for many families with young children as it helps them balance their professional and parenting responsibilities. Existing research indicates that support provided by parents to their adult children in childcare positively impacts decisions regarding childbirth and women's participation in the labor market. The aim of this study is to analyze patterns of support transfer between different generations and identify factors influencing intergenerational transfers in Moldova. It is based on data from the "Generations and Gender" (GGS) study conducted in 2020. Thanks to its representative sample, the study encompasses aspects such as intergenerational transfers related to childcare and grandchildren, attitudes toward childcare, and socio-demographic variables. Statistical analysis involves cross-tabulations and logistic regressions to identify factors determining participation/transmission of support in childcare. The research findings demonstrate that grandparents provide significant assistance to their adult children in childcare, particularly during the initial years of the child's life. This support is predominantly received by women with young children and women with higher education with children. Typically, childcare assistance is offered by grandparents approaching pre-retirement and retirement ages. Factors such as children's ages, family size, level of education, and urban residence significantly influence the receipt of childcare assistance. The results underscore the importance of traditional values and societal expectations, providing a nuanced understanding of intergenerational relationships amidst a changing demographic landscape. They could prove valuable for policymakers and developers of programs supporting families with children.

The socio-demographic profile of infertile couples and causes of infertility in Moldova: the case study

The present study aims to analyze infertile married couples’ demographic and social characteristics to understand the need for policy interventions to prevent, diagnose, and treat infertility in Moldova. The study provides information about couples facing the problem of infertility, its causes and risk factors. The study is based on the analysis of medical documentation from the files submitted by infertile couples, during 2017-2021, to the Commission for the Evaluation of Insured Couples. In addition to the documentary analysis, the individual interviews were followed during the Commission meetings with the 244 couples whose files submitted met all the conditions stipulated in the normative acts of the Ministry of Health. The study results showed that the primary beneficiaries of in vitro fertilization are people aged 30-39 who live in urban areas, usually in the capital city of Chisinau. Married couples from rural areas are less likely to use specialized services, which is associated with their low level of information and the low financial availability of this service for rural residents. Among the main infertility factors, the tubal factor was detected, which determined more than half of the cases of infertility among the studied couples. Based on the research, some policy recommendations are formulated, such as improving the information system and databases, increasing access to services and the quality of the services offered, and introducing measures to prevent infertility.
