Rare case ofPrevotella pleuritidislung abscess

Abstract: Prevotella genus comprises of obligate anaerobic, gram-negative bacteria that are commensal organisms of oral cavity, gut and vaginal mucosa. Although many Prevotella species have well-established pathogenicity with respect to pulmonary infections, rarely has Prevotella pleuritidis been isolated as a cause of lung abscess. We present a rare case of left lower lobe lung abscess due to P. pleuritidis identified using next-generation sequencing of microbial cell-free DNA testing. A brief review of the literature … Show more

“…Some novel Prevotella species without knowledge of their preferred habitat have been among recoveries, especially from pus specimens. For example, the description of P. pleuritidis was performed based on a single strain from pleural fluid [ 201 ], and since then, its presence was reported also from lung and liver abscesses [ 202 , 203 ]. Noteworthy are the frequently abundant findings of P. pleuritidis among the oral microbiota of the study populations from the United Arab Emirates and Sweden: in subgingival biofilms of heavy smokers [ 204 ] and in saliva of early-onset rheumatoid arthritis patients [ 205 ], respectively.…”

“…55 It has been rarely reported to be particularly important in the pathogenesis of lung abscesses. 56 Moreover, P. pleuritidis and others were significantly identified in smokers’ oral microbiota compared to non-smokers. 57 Concerning limitations of the study, the oral health, preexisting periodontal disease, and smoking data were unavailable, so these confounding factors might affect the obtained result.…”

“…Initial surgical cultures from the FNA collected during EBUS grew coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CoNS), a type of staph commonly found as part of the normal flora of the skin. The other organism that was identified during mediastinoscopy was a Prevotella species, a genus of bacteria involving obligate, anaerobic, gram-negative bacteria that are commensal organisms of the oral cavity, gut, and vaginal mucosa [ 3 ].…”
