Rare Complications of Migraine With Aura

Abstract: The complications of migraine that arise from migraine aura are infrequently encountered in clinical practice; however, they can be severely disabling for patients. As these conditions are encountered, thorough diagnostic evaluation is necessary. In some cases, it may be difficult to find a consistently reliable therapeutic option for these patients; however, as more cases enter the literature, a greater understanding of these conditions and how to treat them may arise.

“…Treatment strategies also need to take into account patients’ co-morbidities, vascular risk factors, and drug interactions. Given that pro-thrombotic alterations and platelet activation are presumed to play a role in MI, it is generally recommended that antiplatelet therapy be initiatedto prevent ischemic events 2…”

“…Consequently, the brain of migraineurs is more vulnerable to ischemia even after a mild and transient hypoxic state 27. The triggering of a chain reaction of detrimental processes including prolonged vasoconstriction due to reduced nitric oxide, increased extracellular K + , and endothelial ion channel/pump dysfunction eventually lead to vasospasm2 and brain infarction 66. CSD may also induce the release of inflammatory mediators, vasoactive peptides, and adhesion molecules, which predisposes to intravascular thrombosis 50…”

“…The fi rst group of patients experiences their aura as being very similar to the classic migraine aura, only lasting much longer. The second group of patients describes the visual snow as mentioned above (4,5). In our study, we dealt with PAWI patients describing their pathological symptoms in accordance with visual snow symptoms.…”
