Rare skeletal muscle metastasis from renal cell carcinoma: case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a tumor that usually metastasizes to lung, liver, bone and brain, but rarely to skeletal muscles. We report a case of an elderly man with a history of bilateral metachronous RCC for which he underwent curative bilateral nephrectomies and renal transplantation, was in remission, and presented with a large solitary skeletal muscle metastasis from the initial RCC, 3 years later.

“…RCC is commonly known to metastasize to the lungs, bone, and brain, but RCC can metastasize to some atypical sites as well, such as skeletal muscle [4], scalp [5] and uvula [6], as described in the literature. This report describes the metastasis of clear cell renal cell carcinoma to the metatarsus.…”

“…Researchers have found that most common tumors with muscle metastases come from the thyroid, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, colon, rectum, bladder, breast, ovary, and prostate[ 7 - 10 ]. However, the most common sites of muscle metastases are the erector spine, iliopsoas, and paravertebral muscle[ 11 - 13 ], which are rare in skeletal muscles of limbs. Guidi et al [ 14 ] reported a case of epithelial cell carcinoma in the bladder, metastasizing into the superficial flexor muscle of the thumb, while, Katafigiotis et al [ 15 ] reported two cases of sartorius metastatic tumors.…”
