The states of Sergipe and Bahia comprise the main nesting beaches for olive ridley sea turtles Lepidochelys olivacea in Brazil. Between February 2014 and March 2015, 40 L. olivacea were equipped with Argos platform transmitter terminal tags. A state-space model was applied to Argos location data to investigate the animals' spatial ecology and identify areas of restricted movements (ARMs) and directional movements. The inter-nesting ARMs included the continental shelf from the south of Alagoas state to the north of Bahia, totaling 7244 km 2 (kernel density estimation, 90% isopleth) and generally extended up to 22 km from the coast or to the 50 m isobath. The post-nesting directional movements were classified as either (1) neritic north/ northeastern (N/NE) Brazil to French Guiana (n = 4 turtles), (2) neritic south/southeastern (S/SE) Brazil (n = 16), or (3) oceanic (n = 19) from Brazil to West Africa. ARMs consistent with foraging areas were identified for 24 olive ridleys: 15 along the continental shelf of SE Brazil, 2 adjacent to Ceará and Maranhão states (between the 25 and 75 m isobaths), and 7 off the African countries of Cape Verde, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, and Sierra Leone. The results de monstrated the complexity of olive ridley movements from northern Brazil, raised questions about connectivity, and highlighted threats such as fisheries, ports, and hydrocarbon exploration fields overlapping with, or near to, high-use areas. These results can be used as a basis for spatial management measures to protect this endangered species.

Sea turtles are migratory species that occupy several marine and coastal habitats along their different life stages. The study of the spatial and temporal distribution of these vertebrates has been revolutionized with technological advances such as satellite telemetry, which in the last two decades has substantially increased its implementation. This technology attends the need of knowing and locating their critical habitats (such as inter-nesting, migrating, feeding and mating) as well as know their migratory movements for the understanding of their biology and protection through the deployment of satellite transmitters on sea turtle individuals. Because the cost of a satellite transmitter is high, its effective deployment on a sea turtle in a quickly, safely, and firmly way is of vital interest to the researcher to ensure that the transmitter persists for an extended time maximizing the information contribution and benefit the research. In this context, the objective of this contribution is to describe and document experiences applying standardized and verified methodological steps for deploying satellite transmitters on hard shell marine turtles. This contribution represents a documented and step-by-step viable description on the path to have clear and versatile basis as reference for the satellite transmitter deployments.

Growth dynamics helps to elucidate demographic aspects, such as age at specific size and size at maturity or first reproduction, which are important for sea turtle management. The Mexican Caribbean Sea is an important feeding ground for green turtles, but demographic data for the turtles are lacking. Size-based growth rates of immature green turtles inhabiting a foraging ground at Akumal Bay (20° 24' 0'' N and 87° 19' 16'' W) were obtained by using a mixed longitudinal sampling design from historic mark-recapture data (2004-2014). Curved carapace length (CCL) of immature turtles at first capture ranged from 27.8-81.0 cm and minimum size at recruitment was 27.8 cm CCL. Recapture intervals ranged from 1-49 months, 72% of the recaptures (n=172) occurred in less than a year and 90% before 1.5 years. A monotonic size-specific growth function displays the maximum growth rate (6.25 cm yr-1) at about 46-48 cm CCL before starts declining steadily at >60 cm CCL. Mean size presented a non-linear relationship with growth rates and year of capture had a negative linear effect over growth; the lowest annual mean growth rates were registered during 2009 and 2012. Based on GAM predictions an immature sea turtle recruited to the feeding ground (28 cm CCL) would require between 13-14 years to reach the average nesting size, supporting field observations. A negative linear relationship between annual mean growth rate and the relative estimated sea turtle abundance (p=0.001) suggests a density-dependent effect. The quantitative information presented will help understand life history patterns and provide a baseline to assess future dynamics of this green turtle population.
