Rat Resistance to Schistosomiasis: Platelet-Mediated Cytotoxicity Induced by C-Reactive Protein

Abstract: In rats infected with the parasite Schistosoma mansoni, the concentration of C-reactive protein in the serum increases after the lung stage of infection and is at its highest at the time of terminal worm rejection. The peak of platelet-mediated cytotoxicity induced by infected serum that has been heated (and is free of immunoglobulin E) as well as the time course for the development of platelet cytotoxic activity in infected rats was found to be correlated with the concentration of C-reactive protein. Rat and … Show more

“…In addition, platelets have been shown many years ago to have Gram-positive bactericidal activity (39) and, more recently, to participate in the cytotoxicity against parasites responsible for schistosomiasis (40,41) and toxoplasmosis (42). There is also experimental evidence of cytotoxicity of platelets against tumor cells (43,44), with downmodulation of cell killing when platelets were pretreated with cyclooxygenase or lipoxygenase inhibitors (43) or protease inhibitors (44).…”

“…In rats, Schistosoma infection causes an increase in serum levels of CRP, a positive acute-phase protein associated with VLDL and LDL. CRP has been shown to activate platelets and render them cytotoxic to schistosomula in vitro (370). Besides platelets, activated monocytes can kill schistosomula.…”

“…Many authors have estimated the effect of IgE, TNF, IFN-γ , IL-6 and C-reactive protein on the cytotoxicity of blood platelets in the course of schistosomosis [6,[28][29][30][31][32]. It has been known that the release of toxic substances by platelets depends on the presence of IgE and specific antigens found in a soluble form or on the parasite [34].…”
