Rate-Distortion Optimized Streaming of Authenticated Video

Abstract: Stream authentication methods usually impose overhead and dependency among packets. The straightforward application of state-of-the-art rate-distortion (R-D) optimized streaming techniques produce highly sub-optimal R-D performance for authenticated video, since they do not account for the additional dependencies. This paper proposes an R-D optimized streaming technique for authenticated video, by accounting for authentication dependencies and overhead. It schedules packet transmission based on packets' import… Show more

“…A packet received after its deadline will be not used for display. In [8], we proposed an R-D-A optimized framework for streaming of authenticated video over a lossy network, which extends the RaDiO framework to incorporate another dimension for authentication. In addition to the original parameters considered in [6], the R-D-A optimized technique accounts for the authentication dependency and overhead size 0.…”

“…The main high-level differences between RaDiO [6] and R-D-A optimized framework [8] are briefly summarized. First R-D-A is an extension of RaDiO designed for streaming of authenticated video where a packet received but not verified is not decoded or used for display.…”

“…In that approach, authentication graph is designed to trade off authentication bit budget overhead and authenticated media quality given specific packet loss ratio. In [3] a rate-distortion optimized authentication framework for H.264 video authentication and transmission is proposed. The end to end distortion of authenticated video packets is minimized based on each packet's visual importance and additional authentication dependency.…”
