Rate of convergence of the Nesterov accelerated gradient method in the subcritical case α ≤ 3

Abstract: Abstract. In a Hilbert space setting H, given Φ : H → R a convex continuously differentiable function, and α a positive parameter, we consider the inertial system with Asymptotic Vanishing Damping (AVD) αẍ (t) + α tẋ (t) + ∇Φ(x(t)) = 0.Depending on the value of α with respect to 3, we give a complete picture of the convergence properties as t → +∞ of the trajectories generated by (AVD) α , as well as iterations of the corresponding algorithms. Indeed, as shown by Su-Boyd-Candès, the case α = 3 corresponds to a… Show more

“…Moreover, this decay is optimal and reached for F (x) = |x| γ if γ 1 (see [6] for with the sole assumption of convexity which corresponds to the case γ = 1 and [10] for the general case and the optimality of the rate). Notice that for convex functions, the decay is O 1 t 2α 3…”

“…The new Proposition 5.14 presents some progress towards the still open question regarding the convergence of (x n ) n∈N * generated by classical FISTA. The weak convergence part in Corollary 5.15 was considered in [4]; however, our new Fejérian approach allows us to obtain strong convergence when int(Argmin h) = ∅.…”
