Rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) has emerged as a novel, general, and powerful framework for the design and optimization of non-orthogonal transmission, multiple access (MA), and interference management strategies for future wireless networks. By exploiting splitting of user messages as well as non-orthogonal transmission of common messages decoded by multiple users and private messages decoded by their corresponding users, RSMA can softly bridge and therefore reconcile the two extreme interference management strategies of fully decoding interference and treating interference as noise. RSMA has been shown to generalize and subsume as special cases four existing MA schemes, namely, orthogonal multiple access (OMA), physical-layer multicasting, space division multiple access (SDMA) based on linear precoding (currently used in the fifth generation wireless network-5G), and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) based on linearly precoded superposition coding with successive interference cancellation (SIC). Through information and communication theoretic analysis, RSMA has been shown to be optimal (from a Degrees-of-Freedom region perspective) in several transmission scenarios. Compared to the conventional MA strategies used in 5G, RSMA enables spectral efficiency (SE), energy efficiency (EE), coverage, user fairness, reliability, and quality of service (QoS) enhancements for a wide range of network loads (including both underloaded and overloaded regimes) and user channel conditions. Furthermore, it enjoys a higher robustness against imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) and entails lower feedback overhead and complexity. Despite its great potential to fundamentally change the physical (PHY) layer and media access control (MAC) layer of wireless communication networks, RSMA is still confronted with many challenges on the road towards standardization. In this paper, we present the first comprehensive tutorial on RSMA by providing a survey of the pertinent state-ofthe-art research, detailing its architecture, taxonomy, and various appealing applications, as well as comparing with existing MA schemes in terms of their overall frameworks, performance, and complexities. An in-depth discussion of future RSMA research challenges is also provided to inspire future research on RSMAaided wireless communication for beyond 5G systems.

An intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an emerging technology in the next-generation (B5G and 6G) wireless communications with the aim of improving the spectral/energy efficiency of the wireless networks. In this paper, we focus on multiple IRS-aided multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) downlink network, where each IRS is deployed near to the cell boundary of the cellular network in order to help the downlink transmission to the cell-edge users. To achieve the significant performance benefits provided by the rate-splitting (RS) transmission in multiuser scenario, two-layer hierarchical rate splitting (2L-HRS) technique is deployed at the base station (BS) to serve all the users. Furthermore, we propose an On-Off scheme for controlling the IRSs with practical phase shifts. In order to analyze the performance of the users, we derive the closed-form expressions of outage probability for both cell-edge users and near users. By extensive Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate that the proposed design framework outperforms the corresponding one-layer RS (1L-RS), the multiuser linear precoding (MU-LP) and 2L-HRS without IRS. In addition, we reveal the advantages of introducing RS-based IRS in improving the cell-users' performance. Integrating intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) and Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) is an effective solution to improve the spectral/energy efficiency in next-generation (beyond 5G (B5G) and 6G) wireless networks. In this paper, we investigate a rate-splitting (RS)-based transmission technique for an IRSaided communication network involving both near and cell-edge users. In particular, we derive a new architecture called IRS-RS that leverages the interplay between RS and IRS, with an aim to maximize the weighted sum-rate (WSR) of users by selecting the reflecting coefficients at the IRS and designing beamformers at the BS under the constraints of power at the base station (BS), quality of service (QoS) at each user and finite resolution at the IRS. To solve the non-convex WSR maximization problem, we propose an alternating algorithm and compare its performance with baseline non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) based transmission for an IRS-aided communication network for both perfect and imperfect CSIT cases. Through numerical results, it is shown that the proposed IRS-RS architecture yields better QoS with respect to the cell-edge users when compared to IRS-NOMA transmission scheme.Index Terms-Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), rate-splitting (RS), non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), beamforming.
