Rates and activation energies of nitronium ion formation and reaction in the nitration of toluene in ∼78% sulphuric acid

Abstract: A stopped-flow spectrometer has been used to investigate the mechanism of the nitration of toluene, and to determine kinetic parameters for the formation and reaction of nitronium ion, in 77.3 and 78.45 wt.% sulphuric acid. The protonation of nitric acid t o form nitronium ion and water is found to occur at similar rates at both acid concentrations and to have an activation energy of 18.3 t 4.0 kcal mol-l. The activation energy of the reverse reaction, the heat of the reaction, and the activation energy of enc… Show more

“…The data used for this reaction network, relevant to industry, are given in Table 3. Table 3: Process parameters for the nitration of toluene reaction network (Luo and Chang, 1998;Sheats and Strachan, 1978;Chen et al, 2008;Mawardi, 1982). Hence, this reaction process gives a good challenge in order to keep the process under control.…”

“…The nitration of toluene is a relevant process in industry, consisting of endothermic and exothermic reactions (Halder et al, 2008). Thermal runaways can occur still, (Chen et al, 2008;Luo and Chang, 1998;Mawardi, 1982;Sheats and Strachan, 1978).…”
