Rates of Tectonometamorphic Processes from Rubidium and Strontium Isotopes in Garnet

Abstract: Measurement of the radial variation of the 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratio in a single crystal from a metamorphic rock can be used to determine the crystal's growth rate. That variation records the accumulation of 87 Sr from radioactive decay of 87 Rb in the rock matrix from which the crystal grew. This method can be used to study the rates of petrological processes associated with mountain building. It is applied to garnet crys… Show more

“…The issue of how fast mineral reactions occur in rocks is one that has exercised petrologists and isotope geochemists alike (e.g, Wood & Walther 1983;Rubie & Thompson 1985;Christensen et al 1989;Vance & O'Nions 1990;Baxter & DePaolo 2000, 2002a. As we have noted earlier, an understanding of the relative rates of attainment of isotopic, chemical and textural equilibrium is one of the main problems barring progress in understanding isotopic ages in a petrological and structural context.…”

It is the experience of the lead author on this paper that the success rate, as measured by the ability to obtain age precisions of 1-3 Ma, is less than 50%.…”
