Ratio of Serum IgG3 to Total IgG Concentration and Goiter Size Are Independent Factors in Intractability of Graves' Disease

Abstract: Abstract. Peripheral immunoglobulin (Ig) G 3 -secreting cells and serum concentrations of interleukin (IL)-10, a classswitching factor to IgG 3 -secreting cells, increase in patients with intractable Graves' disease (GD). However, they are not practical for laboratory tests. To find more stable and easily detectable markers of disease intractability or disease severity in patients with GD or Hashimoto's disease (HD), we examined the serum concentration of IgG 3 in 58 euthyroid GD patients who had been undergoi… Show more

“…Clinical characteristics of the examined subjects are given in Table 1. The titres of TgAb and McAb were significantly higher in patients with severe HD than in those with mild HD, as was the case in our previous report [19], and the goitre sizes were larger in patients with intractable GD than those with GD in remission, as in our previous report [20]. The goitre sizes were smaller in patients with severe HD than those with mild HD probably because of severe tissue destruction in patients with severe HD.…”

“…Clinical characteristics of the examined subjects are given in Table I. The TgAb titres were significantly higher in patients with severe HD than in those with mild HD, as shown in our previous report [33], and the goitre size was larger in patients with intractable GD than in those with GD in remission, as shown in our previous report [34]. The goitre size was smaller in patients with severe HD than in those with mild HD probably because of severe tissue destruction.…”
