Rational design of host materials for phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes by modifying the 1-position of carbazole

Abstract: A novel carbazole moiety with bromine at the 1-position of carbazole was synthesized and four carbazole compounds derived from the 1-position modified carbazole were developed as the host materials for phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes. The 1-position modified carbazole was coupled with another carbazole to prepare bicarbazole intermediates, which were substituted with 4,6-diphenyltriazine to yield four bicarbazole derivatives modified with the electron deficient diphenyltriazine unit. The triplet h… Show more

“…The combination of diphenyltriazine and 1‐position‐modified carbazole was used to develop four diphenyltriazine derivatives for green PHOLEDs . The four host materials were 9‐(4,6‐diphenyl‐1,3,5‐triazin‐2‐yl)‐9′‐phenyl‐9 H ,9′ H ‐1,10‐bicarbazole (1‐PCz‐1‐TCz), 9‐(4,6‐diphenyl‐1,3,5‐triazin‐2‐yl)‐9′‐phenyl‐9 H ,9′ H ‐1,2′‐bicarbazole (2‐PCz‐1‐TCz), 9‐(4,6‐diphenyl‐1,3,5‐triazin‐2‐yl)‐9′‐phenyl‐9 H ,9′ H ‐1,3′‐bicarbazole (3‐PCz‐1‐TCz), and 9‐(4,6‐diphenyl‐1,3,5‐triazin‐2‐yl)‐9′‐phenyl‐9 H ,9′ H ‐1,4′‐bicarbazole (4‐PCz‐1‐TCz), which showed bipolar charge‐transport character.…”

“…Halogen (−Br, −Cl, −F)-substituted 2,2′-diamino-1,1′-biaryls produced the corresponding carbazoles ( 2b – d ). In particular, 1-bromocarbazole 2b is a good precursor for the synthesis of various host materials for phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes by further functionalization at the 1-position . Substrates with various electron-withdrawing groups (such as −Br, −Cl, −F, −OCF 3 , −COMe, −CO 2 Me, −CN, and −NO 2 ) smoothly underwent cyclization to furnish the desired carbazoles ( 2b – i ).…”
