RDA Planning, Implementation and Use: A Comparison of Two Academic Libraries

Abstract: Since the Library of Congress announced it would move forward with full RDA implementation on 31 March 2013, libraries in the United States have been working hard on planning, training and implementing RDA in their own libraries' cataloguing workflow. However, there is no single model for RDA planning and implementation that works for every library, because the implementation plan should be developed based on each library's unique situation, organizational structure and culture. Columbia University Libraries a… Show more

“…Čeprav bi LRM lahko pomagal premagati nekatere pomanjkljivosti katalogizacij skih sistemov, mnogi avtorji pojasnjujejo, da v trenutnih katalogizacijskih siste mih ne moremo izkoristiti potenciala konceptualnih modelov (oziroma/in RDA) v polni meri, ker sistemi niso sposobni odražati entitetnorelacijskega modela (Cronin, 2011;Wacker in Han, 2013;Park in Tosaka, 2015;Dunsire et al, 2020). Zato je eden od večjih izzivov implementacije modela LRM ustvariti katalogi zacijski vmesnik, ki zagotavlja učinkovit in uspešen vnos podatkov na podlagi izkoriščanja njegovih prednosti, a so bili dosedanji poskusi tovrstnih imple mentacij redki in zelo omejeni.…”

“…When it came to the implementation process, many variables depended on organisational structure and culture (Wacker and Han, 2013: 27). Most institutions reported that a lot of attention was dedicated to the creation of policies to go with the new instructions and that those were mostly based on the LC/PCC Policy Statement (Wacker and Han, 2013;Wu et al, 2016). Other aspects mentioned were the process of gradually transitioning to RDA, by giving cataloguers plenty of time to adjust to the change without setting deadlines (Hanford, 2014: 162) and the formation of specialised working groups to work on different aspects of the implementation (Morris and Wiggins, 2016).…”

“…The case studies pointed out various issues and concerns around RDA. Many of the implementers did not believe RDA could reach its full potential within current integrated library systems (ILS) because they are not able to reflect the E-R model (Cronin, 2011;Park and Tosaka, 2015;Wacker and Han, 2013). Even greater seemed to be the frustration with the MARC format, which they viewed as restrictive to implementing the underlying relational FRBR concepts of RDA (Jin and Sandberg, 2013: 234).…”
