Re‐adjusting the cut‐off score of the Korean version of the Childhood Autism Rating Scale for high‐functioning individuals with autism spectrum disorder

Abstract: The likelihood of a false negative error increases when K-CARS is used to diagnose high-functioning autism and Asperger's syndrome. For subjects with ASD and substantial verbal ability, the cut-off score for K-CARS should be re-adjusted and/or supplementary diagnostic tools might be needed to enhance diagnostic accuracy for ASD.

“…We analyzed the agreement of the results of the BeDevel‐P and BeDevel‐I with those of preexisting screening instruments for ASD, including SCQ, SRS, ADOS, ADI‐R, and K‐CARS. For SCQ and K‐CARS, we applied the following cutoff scores for the Korean population, which were previously validated by our team: 10 for SCQ (instead of 15 in original version) for toddlers and children younger than 48 months old, and 24 for K‐CARS (instead of 30 in original version) [Kim et al, ; Kwon et al, ]…”

“…During the visit, the semi-professional examiners, who were blind to the diagnostic status of participants, implemented the BeDevel-I/P to all participants. Trained and qualified diagnostic assessment staff, who were independent from the BeDevel-I/P examiners, administered Korean translation of ADOS and ADOS-2 (Lord et al, 2000;Lord et al, 2012;Yoo et al, 2017), the Korean translation of ADI-R (Rutter et al, 2013;Park et al, 2014), and K-CARS (Kim & Park, 1995;Kwon et al, 2017;Schopler et al, 2010). The order of BeDevel-I/P and other diagnostic assessments were randomized.…”

“…The additional instruments used included the SCQ (Rutter et al, 2003) Lord et al, 2012;Yoo et al, 2017), the Korean translation of autism diagnostic interviewrevised (ADI-R; Rutter et al, 2013;Park et al, 2014), and Korean standardized version of the childhood autism rating scale (K-CARS; Kim & Park, 1995;Kwon et al, 2017;Schopler et al, 2010). Because each screening and/or diagnostic instrument has a specific age range for which the instrument was validated, we only included the data collected from the participants within the specified age range in the validation analyses (see the footnote of Table 1 for the age range applied for each instrument).…”
